The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has recently released an Industry Code of Practice with regards to spam. This Code compliments the Spam Act 2003 and sets out Industry Standards that internet service providers (ISPs) must meet when dealing with spam. Connexus fully supports this initiative and fully complies with the law.

To comply with the Spam Act, your e-mails must:

  • Only be sent to recipients who have consented under the Spam Act
  • Clearly identify the person or organisation that authorised the e-mail
  • Give accurate information on how to contact you
  • The contact information must be likely to remain valid for 30 days
  • It must contain a clear and conspicuous unsubscribe facility that will work for at least the next 30 days

Additionally, you must ensure that any mail or proxy servers which you maintain are not ‘open’—that is, they cannot be used to relay e-mail by anyone not authorised to do so. For example, the Connexus mail servers will only allow e-mail to be sent by customers from within the Connexus network.

It is important that any commercial e-mail that you send complies with each of these requirements.

Making a Spam Complaint

Please read the Connexus spam Policy before making a report or complaint about spam, as incomplete requests cannot be accepted.

To make a complaint about spam, you should send an e-mail to abuse@connexus.net.au. In order for your e-mail to be processed, it must contain the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your e-mail address
  • Whether you are a Connexus customer, and if so, your Connexus Account Number or e-mail address
  • Whether you are making a report or complaint
  • Why the relevant e-mail you are reporting is spam
  • Whether your complaint or report relates to (a) spam sent through our network, (b) a spam-related breach of our Acceptable Use Policy, or (c) another reason
  • Full information about the spam incident including a copy of the spam e-mail with headers intact so that we can try and identify the origin of the mail

Please note that Connexus has no power to prevent third parties from outside the Connexus network sending spam to Connexus clients. However, we recommend that all Connexus customers make full use of the Connexus spam filters, which can be configured through the My Account section.

Connexus has developed a powerful spam filtering service which is available free of charge for all customers.
