Accessing Your Email From Interstate or Overseas

Connexus MailWeb allows you to read & send Connexus email from any web browser - anywhere in the world!

You can easily check your email from work, school or university.

If you are heading interstate or overseas, you can often find web browsers in libraries, Internet cafes and airport terminals.

Simply open the following address/URL with your web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc):

http://mail.connexus.net.au

After you have opened the site you will be prompted to enter your username and password. The contents of your mailbox will subsequently appear on the screen!

Points to note:

  • You can only read messages which are stored on the Connexus server - you cannot read messages which have been downloaded to your hard drive at home.
  • If you delete messages through the MailWeb facility, they will be permanently deleted from your mailbox and you will not be able to download them when you return home.

The first time you log into MailWeb you will be presented with the following welcome notice. Click Continue to advance to the next page.

The next page that is presented is the User Preference page. Here you can configure how MailWeb will look and act. It is not necessary to make any changes at the outset to use MailWeb so you can scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save.

When you have made your changes, or you wish to save the default settings, press Save. Once this has been done you will be presented with the following screen. Press Continue to advance to the next page.

Adding an address to your address book.

To add an email address all you need to do is place the cursor in the Name field and enter the name of the person or organisation you wish to add.
Then in the "E-mail Address(es)" field type in the actual email address for the address in the Name field. The Notes field allows you to give a description of the email, this field is optional.

Setting up Outlook Express

When you open Outlook Express you will be presented with the following screen.

Once you have opened Outlook Express click on the "Tools" link at the top of the page.
From there scroll down to "Accounts" and click once.

Once you have done this you will be presented with the following Dialogue box.

On the far right of the Dialogue box click the "Add" button and then click the "Mail" link.

From here on you will be asked for details given to you by Connexus at the time you signed up.

This Dialogue box asks for your Display name. This is the name you wish people to see when you send an email.

For example it could be your full name, the name of your business etc.

When you signed up with Connexus you will have been given an email account. Type this in the space provided and ensure that it is in lower-case.

For this next section fill in the details as you see them below.

Now you will need to put in your Username and password to finish off the process.

Outlook Express calls your Username "Account name".

Once you click "Finish" on the next Dialogue box you are ready to start sending and receiving your emails.

Configuring Connexus SafeMail

Connexus SafeMail analyses the text of every email for specific characteristics which are common to SPAM mail. To activate SafeMail, simply open the following address/URL with your web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc): http://accounts.connexus.net.au

Once you have opened MyAccount, you will be presenting the following screen, click SafeMail Configuration:

When the SafeMail Configuration window is open, you will be presented with the following screen. This interface allows you to set the Spam Threshold Level and select the Spam / Virus Action.

SPAM Virus Action

  • Selecting Discard SPAM will delete emails with a spam level greater than the nominated threshold level before they come through to your inbox.
  • Selecting modify subject will tag all messages with the word spam in the subject field with the spam threshold level.
  • Click the plus sign to learn more about SPAM.

SPAM Threshold Level

Setting the level to 5 should be sufficient. Adjust the spam threshold accordingly if you notice that some genuine emails are not coming through.

Note:

  • Moving the slide towards CATCH MORE SPAM will certainly reduce the number of SPAM messages getting through; however this feature also presents a higher risk of some legitimate email (commonly newsletters and wanted advertising material) being identified as SPAM also. Depending on your settings in the SPAM/Virus Action section, this email may be discarded or have it's subject modified.
  • Once you are confident that Connexus SafeMail is tagging SPAM correctly, you can select SPAM / Virus Action to discard SPAM to permanently. This will remove E-Mails with a SPAM level greater than your nominated threshold level before it is received into your inbox.
  • To save your changes, click the button ‘Update Safemail Settings’.

Congratulations! Your Connexus SafeMail has now been configured.

Should you continue to receive SPAM or have any queries about SafeMail, please contact our Support team on 1300 133 888 or e-mail support@connexus.net.au.

Retrieiving Email From a Jammed Mailbox

Email is an important facility for many Internet users - perhaps that is why nearly half of the support calls to the Connexus HelpDesk relate to email problems. A common use of email is for transmission of "attachments" - pictures, sounds, movies, spreadsheets and other documents.

Attachments sometimes become "jammed" at the Connexus server, blocking other messages from being received. The cause of this problem varies - it can be due to incompatibilities between mail clients, or coding inside the attachment which interferes with modem signals.

Connexus MailWeb allows the bad messages to be removed at the server, allowing the remaining mail to be downloaded to your computer.

How to access your email using WebMail

You'll need a web browser (eg. Netscape, Internet Explorer) to follow this step. We suggest that you print this page before proceeding, so that you can read these instructions whilst you are accessing your mailbox.

Simply open the following address/URL with your web browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc):

http://mail.connexus.net.au - Entering your Username and Password.

After clicking on the above link a new window will appear. You will need to enter your Connexus username (login name) and password. Remember that your username is the first section of your email address, before the @ symbol. For example, if your email address is johnny@connexus.net.au then your username would be johnny. Also remember to use all small letters for your username - never use any capital letters. Click the "Login" button when you have entered this information.

Registering with the MailWeb system.

The first time you use the MailWeb system you will be asked to enter some information. You only need to enter your Name (e.g. John Smith) - the other settings are optional. Once you have entered your name click the Save Config button.

Reading your email

The main MailWeb screen will list all your messages - their subject, sender's name, and other information. To read a message, click on the subject line.

Attachments are normally large messages; the size of each messages is listed in the Bytes column on the right-hand side of the screen. When reading a message with attachments you can optionally download those attachments onto your hard drive.

Deleting your email
There are two ways to delete your email:

  1. When you are reading a message, click the Delete button at the bottom of the message
  2. On the screen which lists all your messages (subject, sender, etc), click the Select box corresponding to each message you want to delete, then click the button labelled "Del Sel Items"

When you delete a message from MailWeb it is permanently erased and cannot be retrieved. Because the MailWeb facility directly manipulates your Connexus mailbox, any messages deleted through MailWeb will not be received using your normal email program. This allows you to delete any messages which have been jamming your normal email program.

Logout from email
When you have finished reading/deleting messages, click the Logout button in the top right corner of the screen.

Error Messages - "lock file busy" etc
These messages will appear if the Connexus mail server is busy servicing your mailbox. If you try to collect messages using your normal email program, but are unsuccessful, it may take 5-10 minutes for the Connexus server to realise that your session was aborted. During this time you will be unable to collect any messages and this error message will appear. Simply wait 5-10 minutes and the server will automatically recover - you do not need to do anything.

Accessing MailWeb from other places
You can use MailWeb from any Internet-connected computer, anywhere in the world!

Points to note:

  • You can only read messages which are stored on the Connexus server - you cannot read messages which have been downloaded to your hard drive at home.
  • If you delete messages through the MailWeb facility, they will be permanently deleted from your mailbox and you will not be able to download them when you return home.

Adding Additional Email Addresses and Mailboxes

Most Connexus Internet plans now provide the option of additional email addresses at no extra charge. This service allows household members to each have a unique email address, accessible using Connexus MailWeb from anywhere in the world!

Adding and Modifying Email Addresses

Addresses are configured from the Connexus Accounts Website: http://accounts.connexus.net.au. When entering Connexus Accounts, use the username and password for your primary Connexus account (the same you use when connecting to the Internet).

Timeout Problem When Sending Attachments

Some attachments cannot be sent by email. This problem is rare but can usually be worked around.

If your email software times out whilst you are sending an attachment to the Connexus -mail server, you should first try sending again. If a timeout occurs at the same point in the transmission, it is likely that your attachment contains a string of characters (purely by chance) which interfere with the modem signalling. Modems talk to each other using special commands. They become confused if the attachment also contains these commands.

To workaround this problem, the attachment needs to be changed. The only method to change the attachment without altering the original file is to use a "compressor" like WinZip. The recipient will then need to uncompress the file using WinZip or a compatible program. WinZip can be downloaded at www.winzip.com.

Alternatively, if the attachment is a Word file or picture, you could try making a small change (ie. saving in a different resolution), and resending the new attachment. With luck, the characters that were interfering in the original version may not be present in the resaved version.
